How to Split a PDF Into Pages or Extract a Page Range
By Docmint Team · · 4 min read
Split a PDF into one file per page, into chunks of N pages, or extract a range such as 1-3, 5 into a new file, without losing any quality.
To split a PDF, open Docmint's Split PDF, drop in the file and choose how to cut it: extract a range such as 1-3, 5 into one new file, save each range as its own file, split every N pages, or save every page individually. Click Split PDF and you get either a single PDF or a ZIP containing all the parts.
Which split mode do you need?
Split PDF offers four ways to divide a document, and picking the right one saves cleanup afterwards.
- Extract a custom range into one file: pull out specific pages, such as the signature pages of a contract or the one chapter a colleague needs, into a single new PDF.
- Separate file per range: type several ranges and get one PDF for each. Ideal for cutting a report into chapters or a combined scan into separate documents.
- Every N pages: cut the document into equal chunks, for example every 2 pages for a stack of two-page forms, or every 20 pages for a long scan.
- Every page: one PDF per page, useful when each page is a separate item, such as individual certificates, payslips or invoices.
How does page-range syntax work?
Ranges use page numbers separated by commas, with a hyphen for a run of pages. The numbers count from the first page of the file, matching the numbers under the thumbnails, not the numbers printed on the pages themselves. A book whose first printed page "1" sits after a cover and table of contents will be offset, so check the thumbnails before you type.
- 1-3 gives pages 1, 2 and 3.
- 1-3, 5 gives pages 1, 2, 3 and 5.
- 1, 4, 9-11 gives pages 1, 4, 9, 10 and 11, in that order.
- Overlapping ranges are allowed, so 1-5, 3-8 is valid; in separate-file mode each range becomes its own PDF, so a shared page appears in both.
How to split a PDF with Docmint
The file is read and split in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
- Open Split PDF and drop your file in. A thumbnail of every page appears.
- Choose how to split: a custom range into one file, a separate file per range, every N pages, or every page.
- Type your ranges (for example 1-3, 7, 10-12) or the number of pages per chunk.
- Click Split PDF. A single result downloads directly; several results come bundled in one ZIP.
- Open the ZIP (a double click works on every modern operating system) and spot-check the first and last file.
How do I split a large PDF into email-sized parts?
Every N pages is the quickest route. Divide the file size by the page count to get a rough size per page, then pick N so each part lands comfortably under your limit. A 60 MB, 120-page scan works out to about 0.5 MB per page, so chunks of 30 pages come to around 15 MB each. Pages vary, especially in scans with photos, so leave some margin.
Often it is better to compress first. Compress PDF can shrink a scanned document considerably, and you may find the whole file fits in one email. If not, split the compressed version so you send fewer parts.
Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?
No. Split PDF copies pages as they are, with the same fonts, images and resolution, so the new files look identical to the matching pages of the original. Text stays selectable and searchable if it was before. The parts may add up to slightly more than the original, because each file needs its own copy of shared resources such as fonts.
Other ways to split a PDF
On a Mac, Preview can do simple extractions: show the thumbnail sidebar, select the pages you want and drag them to the desktop to create a new PDF. On Windows and in most browsers, printing to PDF with a page range produces a new file with just those pages, though printing can drop interactive parts such as links or form fields. Full desktop PDF editors offer splitting too.
Those methods are fine for pulling out a page or two. Split PDF is quicker when you need many files at once, a split every N pages, or one file per page.
Tips and troubleshooting
- If you want to remove pages rather than keep them, Delete Pages is more direct. If you want to keep the removed pages too, splitting is the better choice.
- Need the extracted pages in a different order? Run Organize Pages on the result.
- If the file asks for a password, unlock it with Unlock PDF first (you need the password).
- For chapters, use one range per chapter in separate-file mode so each chapter becomes its own neat file.
