How to Merge PDF Files

The ultimate guide to combining multiple PDF files into one document. Best practices, ordering tips and common mistakes to avoid.

Merging PDFs is one of the most common document tasks: combining invoices for accounting, assembling a report from several chapters, or bundling scanned pages into one file. Here is how to do it well.

Prepare your files

Name files in the order you want them (01-cover.pdf, 02-intro.pdf). Put them in one folder so you can select them all in a single click. Check that each file opens correctly; a corrupted input will stop the merge.

Merge in the browser

  1. Open Merge PDF and drop all files at once.
  2. Drag the list into the right order, or use Sort A–Z.
  3. Click Merge and download the combined document.
  4. Scroll through the result once to confirm the order.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to check the order is the number one issue. Another is merging encrypted files: unlock them first. Finally, merged files are the sum of their parts, so compress afterwards if size matters.
