How to Fix Sideways or Upside-Down Pages in a PDF

By Docmint Team · · 3 min read

Rotate only the pages that are wrong, or all of them, by 90 or 180 degrees and save. Rotation is stored in the page, so quality is untouched.

To fix sideways or upside-down pages, open the PDF in Docmint's Rotate PDF, hover each wrong page and turn it, or use the global buttons to rotate every page at once, then click Rotate PDF and download. Sideways pages need a 90 degree turn in one direction or the other, and upside-down pages need 180 degrees. Rotation is saved in the page itself, so it is lossless and sticks in every viewer.

Why do PDF pages end up sideways or upside down?

Scanners and phones are the usual cause. A sheet fed into a scanner the wrong way round comes out upside down. Landscape pages, such as spreadsheets or wide diagrams, sit sideways in an otherwise portrait scan. Phone scanning apps and cameras decide orientation from the motion sensor, and when the phone is held flat over a desk the sensor often guesses wrong, so some captures come out rotated 90 degrees.

Mixed sources cause it too. When you merge a portrait report with a landscape chart exported from another program, each page keeps the orientation it came with, and some viewers display that differently than you expect.

How to rotate PDF pages with Docmint

  1. Open Rotate PDF and drop your file. Each page shows as a thumbnail with its current orientation.
  2. To fix a single page, hover its thumbnail and use its rotate buttons. Other pages are left alone.
  3. To fix every page, use the global buttons to rotate all pages 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
  4. To fix a double-sided scan where only alternate pages are wrong, apply the rotation to even or odd pages only.
  5. Click Rotate PDF and download the corrected file.

Which way should I rotate?

Look at the top of the text on the thumbnail. If the top of the page points left, rotate 90 degrees clockwise. If it points right, rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise, which is the same as 270 degrees clockwise. If the text is upside down, rotate 180 degrees. Landscape scans inside a portrait document usually need a 90 degree clockwise turn, but check the thumbnail before applying it to a group of pages, since scans are not always consistent.

Should I rotate single pages or all of them?

Rotate all pages when the whole document came out the same wrong way, for example a stack fed into the scanner upside down. One click fixes everything.

Rotate single pages when a scan contains both portrait and landscape sheets. Turn the landscape pages so they read correctly and leave the rest. On a double-sided scan where every back side is upside down, the even or odd option fixes all of them in one step instead of page by page.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. A PDF page has an orientation attribute, and rotating changes that attribute rather than redrawing the content. Nothing is re-encoded, text stays sharp and selectable, and the file size barely changes. You can rotate the same file several times without any loss.

Because the rotation is stored in the PDF page itself, it shows the same way in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and on phones. That is the key difference from the rotate button in many PDF viewers, which only turns your view of the page for the current session. If you rotated a document in a viewer, closed it and found it sideways again, that is why.

Tips for scans and phone captures

  1. Fix orientation before running OCR. Text recognition generally works best on upright pages, so rotate first, then use OCR PDF to make the scan searchable.
  2. If you are building a PDF from phone photos with JPG to PDF, check the page thumbnails afterwards and rotate any that came in sideways.
  3. Pages that are slightly crooked, rather than a quarter turn off, are not a rotation problem. Rotation works in 90 degree steps, so a skewed scan is best fixed by rescanning.
  4. If the pages are in the wrong order as well as the wrong way round, Organize Pages lets you rotate and reorder in the same view.

Other ways to rotate PDF pages

macOS Preview can rotate pages and save the change: select the thumbnails, rotate, then save the file. Most desktop PDF editors have a rotate pages command as well, and both are good options if you already use them. Docmint is handy when you are on a computer without those tools, or when you have several files to fix, since Rotate PDF accepts a batch. Like every Docmint tool, it runs in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.
