How to Crop PDF Margins and Remove Scanner Borders

By Docmint Team · · 4 min read

Drag a crop box or type exact margins, use auto-trim for white space, apply it to all pages or a range, and know how cropping differs from resizing.

To crop PDF margins or remove scanner borders, open the file in Docmint's Crop PDF, drag the crop box on the preview or type the top, right, bottom and left margins, choose all pages or a range, and click Crop PDF. For plain white margins, turn on "Auto-trim whitespace" to find the content edges for you. The crop is applied as a page box, so text stays sharp and searchable.

When does cropping a PDF help?

Reading on a phone or small tablet is the most common reason. Slide handouts, academic papers and many reports have wide margins, and on a narrow screen every millimeter of white space shrinks the text. Trimming the margins lets the content fill the screen, so you zoom and scroll less.

Scans are the second. Flatbed scanners and copiers often leave a gray or black edge where the lid did not cover the glass, and book scans pick up a dark gutter in the middle. Cropping removes these so the document looks clean on screen and wastes less toner when printed.

It also helps when you need a figure, chart or table from a page on its own, for example to drop into a slide or send as a tight excerpt.

How to crop a PDF with Docmint

  1. Open Crop PDF and drop the file. The first page appears with a crop box.
  2. Drag the edges of the box to the area you want to keep, or type the top, right, bottom and left margins in millimeters or percent.
  3. For white margins, turn on "Auto-trim whitespace" to set the box tightly around the content.
  4. Choose whether to apply the crop to all pages or enter a range in the Pages field.
  5. Click Crop PDF and download the result.

Auto-trim or manual crop?

Auto-trim analyses the page image to find where the content starts and ends, then sets the crop box around it. It works best on clean digital documents with white margins, such as exported slides and reports.

Use a manual crop when the margins are not plain white. A dark scanner border can look like content to an automatic tool, so drag the box inside the border yourself or type margins that clear it. Typed margins in percent are handy for consistency: 5% from every side gives the same proportional trim regardless of page size.

Tips for cropping scans

  1. Pages in a scan rarely sit in exactly the same spot. Look through several pages and leave a small safety margin so you do not clip text on a page that shifted.
  2. For scanned books, use different crops for odd and even pages, since the gutter is on the right of one and the left of the other.
  3. If only a few pages have a border, enter just those pages in the Pages field.
  4. Fix rotation before cropping. A sideways page is much easier to crop once Rotate PDF has turned it upright.

Is cropping a PDF permanent?

Not entirely. Cropping sets the page's visible box rather than deleting anything, which is why it is lossless: nothing is re-rendered and the content remains vector. The flip side is that the trimmed area is hidden, not removed, and some advanced editors can restore it.

That matters if you are cropping to hide something, such as a name in a margin note or an internal reference. In that case, crop first and then run the file through Flatten PDF in Rasterise mode, which turns each page into an image so the hidden area is gone for good. Rasterising also removes selectable text, so keep a cropped, unflattened copy for your own use.

Crop or resize: what is the difference?

Cropping changes what part of the page is visible. The page gets smaller and the content stays the same size, so the result is often a non-standard page size. Resizing changes the sheet the page sits on, for example from US Letter to A4, and scales the content to fit.

Use Crop PDF when you want less white space or need to cut away a border. Use Resize Pages when you need a specific paper size for printing or submission. Sometimes you need both: crop away the scanner border, then use "Continue with" to send the result to Resize Pages so every page comes out as a clean A4 or Letter sheet.

Other ways to crop a PDF

macOS Preview can crop: draw a rectangular selection on the page and use the crop command, though applying identical crops across many pages takes some care. Desktop PDF editors offer crop tools with page ranges and precise margins. Both work well if you already have them. Docmint's advantage is the live preview with typed margins and auto-trim in a browser, with the file staying on your device.
